How do I make a back up of my Shared Hosting Account?
Keeping a backup of your website is a wonderful idea. It provides insurance against all types of setbacks, such as security compromises and inadvertently deleting your entire site (it happens).
We suggest backing up your site before you make changes each and every time. That way, if something goes wrong, you have a fresh copy that you know is working. It might seem like a hassle, but the first time you use a backup, you’re going to be thankful.
cPanel offers manually-generated backups to let you keep copies of your website’s files. You can also use most of these backups as restores, returning your account’s files to previous versions of themselves.
To Backup Your cPanel Shared Hosting Account
- Log in to your Control Panel.
- In the Files section, click Backups.
- Click the type of backup you want to create:
- Download or Generate a Full Website Backup — Create a backup of everything on your hosting account to store locally. You cannot restore your website using a Full Website Backup file but you can open the TAR file it creates to extract individual files from it.
- Home Directory — Download a backup of all the files stored on your hosting account, including your domain names’ email addresses and their emails.
- MySQL Database Backups — Download a backup of an individual MySQL database.
- Email Forwarders & Email Filters — Download a backup of either your your email forwarders or filters.
You can use the backup files for any of the Partial Backups as a restore, by uploading the backup file from your local machine, and then clicking Restore.
How do I make a back up of my WordPress site?
WordPress core files are constantly updated and that means that many of your plug-ins need to be updated as well in order to continue working.
These updates often lead to a website “breaking”. Without a recent backup you may find yourself in trouble.
There are several WordPress Add-ons which can automatically perform backups of your sites important files, contact your Personal Support Representative.
You can also perform manual backups of your files and database using the steps listed above, or via phpMyAdmin.
How do I avoid any downtime while I transfer my site?
As long as things are done properly there should be no downtime as a result of the move. We suggest following these steps:
- Sign up for an account with us.
- Upload your website to our servers and test to make sure everything appears as it should.
- Update the name servers with your domain registrar to point to the ones we provide in your welcome e-mail.
- Wait a couple of days before cancelling your old hosting plan. It can take up to 48 hours for the changes to your nameserver fully propagate so it is best to leave some overlap to ensure there is no downtime.
Follow these steps the transition should happen smoothly.
